AI Search

Simple Definition

AI search is a type of search engine that uses an AI language model to generate a direct answer to your question, rather than just returning a list of links for you to click through.

Instead of “here are 10 pages that might help,” AI search says “here is the answer, based on multiple sources.”

Traditional searchAI search
Returns a list of linksGenerates a direct answer
You visit multiple pagesAnswer is synthesized for you
Keyword-based matchingUnderstands natural language questions
Static resultsCan cite sources inline
  • Perplexity: the most well-known standalone AI search engine
  • Google AI Overviews: Google’s AI-generated answer box at the top of results
  • Microsoft Copilot: AI search integrated into Bing
  • ChatGPT with web search: OpenAI’s search-enabled mode

Practical Example

You type: “What’s the best time of year to visit Japan?”

  • Traditional search: Shows 10 articles about Japan travel.
  • AI search: Generates a 3-paragraph summary about cherry blossom season in spring and fall foliage, citing 4 sources.

What This Means for Websites and Creators

AI search is changing how people find information online. When AI answers the question directly, users may not click through to source websites. This is pushing content creators and businesses to think about how their content gets included in AI-generated answers, a practice called Generative Engine Optimization.
