Portable Context

Simple Definition

Portable context is the background information you keep in your own files instead of locking it inside a single AI app. It holds your preferences, project details, writing style, rules, and working notes so you can reuse them across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other tool.

The idea is simple: stop re-teaching every new AI tool from scratch. Save the important context once, in a format you control, usually plain Markdown files, and bring it with you wherever you work.

Why It Matters

When all your project knowledge lives inside one app’s chat history, you are stuck. Switching models means starting over, an outage leaves you without your setup, and testing a new tool feels like too much effort.

Portable context helps you:

Reduce tool lock-in, because your knowledge is not trapped in one vendor
Keep results consistent when you move between AI tools
Recover quickly during an outage by switching to a backup tool
Start new projects faster by reusing proven context

Not every AI tool lets you attach files or reference them the same way, so how you use portable context depends on the tool. But the files themselves stay useful regardless.

Example

A creator keeps a writing-voice.md file with tone rules, a few good examples, a few bad examples, audience notes, and phrases to avoid. When they open ChatGPT, Claude, or another writing assistant, they paste or upload the same file so the AI picks up their style right away instead of guessing.

A Note on Safety

Portable context should hold reusable working information, not secrets. Do not put API keys, passwords, private customer data, or sensitive company information into these files, especially if you plan to upload them into third-party AI tools.
